THE voices of his birth city, Santiago de Cuba, are deep in the heartsong of David Virelles, and they ring from his piano all through his album Carta, alongside New York confreres, bassist Ben Street and drummer Eric McPherson.

All the compositions are his and they radiate a Caribbean soulfulness. Confidencial is slow and ruminative with McPherson’s percussive comradeship close and instinctive, while NY Chepinson reflects those great pianists who made New York their home. Monk and Bud Powell’s life struggles are reborn from Virelles’s every note.

The album’s title tune begins with what sounds like rattling shells, before Virelles’s keys and Street’s delving bass create faraway sounds of intensity and love.

Virelles’s pianism is an amalgam of islands and cities, Cuba and the Apple in a stylistic fusion created by a rare imaginative artistry of sound. Carta is a letter of union, beyond division and hostility.

Saxophonist Tony Malaby has been a hard-hitting presence on the NYC scene for more than a quarter of a century. Although an MVP whose unique sound elevates any bandstand he graces, as shown with the likes of Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band and the Fred Hersch Quintet, he's also an established leader. But while a fearsome improviser whose own albums often swerve to left field, he remains a wholly committed interpreter of other people's concepts, as he shows on the three dates here.

On As Things Do, Malaby finds himself among a crew of peers. It's the second outing from bassist Michael Formanek's all-star Elusion Quartet, completed by drummer Ches Smith and another of the reedman's regular collaborators, pianist Kris Davis. Formanek's formidable scope as a composer ensures he utilizes all the considerable talents at his disposal, mixing intricate parts in often multifaceted charts that offer diverse improvisatory spaces, which are exploited to the full. Malaby certainly enjoys himself on the audacious opener "Bury the Lede", as his tenor soars above a juddering churn that progressively resolves anthemic. Far more than just a fire breather, the saxophonist demonstrates his breadth, all grizzled elegance navigating the shifting meters of "Rewind", then invoking flute-like tones on soprano to accompany Davis' gamelan-inflected piano preparations and Smith's chiming vibes early on in "Cracked Bells", while his playing is lyrically aching on the valedictory "Gone Home". Each track represents a journey into its own world in which nothing can be anticipated other than that excellence awaits.

Malaby guests on Another State of Rhythm, the third release under the banner Old Mountain by the Portuguese pairing of pianist Pedro Branco and drummer João Sousa, who add twin bassists João Hasselberg and Hernâni Faustino to the cast for nine selections. The saxophonist proves well-suited to the outfit's canny blend of "out" there with more inside heartfelt pieces. He shines on the sole cover, a rendition of the offbeat C&W stroll through Leadbelly's blues classic, "Goodnight, Irene": first Branco and then Malaby gradually go off the rails, culminating in a final madcap duet. Thereafter, the saxophonist ranges from tender and delicately keening on the wistful "The Sixth Commandment", to abrasive and raw on the seething "Giraldo". He doesn't appear at all on the hymn-like "Ballad For Paul", a lovely tribute to his erstwhile employer Motian, although his breathy embroidery of the subsequent "Blend in By Standing Out" seems to capture the same spirit.

Malaby joins Madrid-born, NYC-based Álvaro Torres to realize six of the pianist's originals on Live in Barcelona. He's part of Torres' dream team, which also includes Japanese expat bassist Masa Kamaguchi and Danish drummer Kresten Osgood. Torres' compositions pull in influences from post-bop to Spanish folklore, but always remain direct and accessible, with a swinging core. Partly that's down to the leader's strong sense of time, and partly down to the engine room where Osgood brings an irrepressible drive allied to sensitive imagination, all
spiced by just a hint of mischief, alongside the nimble-fingered Kamaguchi. Malaby thrives in the cracks, offering impassioned flourishes to the Monk-tinged "Siresimi", and swaggering through the changes of the involved "You Dig?". The compositional fabric of the standout "The Good Life" barely contains his nerve-shredding squeals and expressive skronk.

Dvakrát moderní jazz Christopha Irnigera z Curychu

Curyšský tenorsaxofonista a skladatel Christoph Irniger (ročník 1979) má na kontě už pět autorských alb se svou kapelou Pilgrim, z toho čtyři na labelu Intakt, kde vydal též tři alba v triu. V kvartetu No Reduce hrál m.j. s americkým bubeníkem Nasheetem Waitsem, dále třeba s Davem Douglasem, Danem Weissem, Nilsem Wogramem nebo progrockovou kapelou Cowboys From ****. Pilgrim se od druhého alba ustálil jako kvintet, v němž s kapelníkem a výhradním skladatelem hrají pianista Stefan Aeby, kytarista Dave Gisler, kontrabasista Raffaele Bossard a bubeník Michael Stulz.

CHRiSTOPH IRNiGER PiLGRiM: Ghost Cat

Album GHOST CAT (Intakt, 2o23) obsahuje ve 48 minutách šest skladeb výsostně současného jazzu, které od počátku vtahují do děje rafinovanými rytmy a stupňovaným napětím. Úvodní Marvel se odvíjí od rychlého swingu činelů a jednoduchého akordu klavíru, do nichž vstupuje Irnigerův tenorsaxofon s jímavou, jemnou a pomalou melodií, rozvíjenou figurami kontrabasu a zatím ještě čistých vyhrávek kytary. Rozjíždí se i piano, aby vše bez zádrhelů dojelo do závěrečné šesté minuty.

Druhá věc s názvem Seven Down Eight Up už je mnohem rafinovanější. Hned v úvodu nastíní piano a poté i saxofon klokotavé téma, s nímž si celý kvintet dále pohrává. Ve chvíli, kdy si melodii předávají hendrixovsky skřípavá Gislerova kytara a Aebyho piano, lze skoro mluvit o progresivním rocku, kterýžto dojem potvrzují komplikovaná metra a činelové eskapády Michiho Stulze, na nichž spočívá následná nápaditá improvizace ostatních členů kvinteta. Vše je přitom zcela přirozené a navýsost lahodné. V titulní Ghost Cat je tenorsaxofon tak jemný, že zpočátku skoro evokuje flétnu. Celá věc se odvíjí v pomalém tempu s dialogem kytary a kontrabasu, pianovým triem a návratem k pastorálnímu tématu.

Podobně jemně začíná i čtyřka s názvem Calling The Spirits, než se její melodie rozpadne do velmi vláčných rozhovorů všech nástrojů v různých kombinacích s volným rytmem krásně znějících činelů. V polovině dvanáctiminutové skladby se vše přiostří a dojde i na rockově bublavé kytarové sólo, aniž by se ztratila všudypřítomná melodičnost. Pak ale přijde takřka free kadence klavíru, která vyústí opět do tichého lyrického melodizování a dovede skladbu ke konci.

Předposlední Four States of Mind je celkově klidná až pastorální věc s jednoduchým témátkem a adekvátními chorusy klavíru a kytary. Zbývá závěrečná Walking with Dinosaurs, startující groovem rytmiky v takřka rockovém pomalém tempu, nad nímž se rozvíjejí rozhovory saxofonu, piana a mclaughlinovské kytary ve variacích propracovaného tématu. Na CD (nikoli v downloadu) pak po cca minutové pauze čeká ještě kratičký bonus.

Celá deska nezapře vliv progresivního rocku, s nímž mají někteří členové kvinteta též zkušenost, a poslouchá se od začátku do konce velmi příjemně, byť jí třeba nemusíte věnovat plnou pozornost. V opačném případě vás ale odmění intenzivním prožitkem z výsostně moderního, téměř akustického evropského jazzu.

Nel recensire «Nuna», album quasi del tutto solitario, avevamo largamente elogiato la capacità di Virelles di ottenere un’efficace sintesi espressiva tra molti elementi, nei quali si ritrovavano il suo altissimo magistero pianistico, profili fortemente identitari, un approccio colto, talora ai limiti dell’intellettualismo, ma anche un afflato tradizionale, quasi di «scuole nazionali», sempre pronto a riemergere. Tutti aspetti che, insieme alla formazione, alle frequentazioni e alla brillante carriera già maturata, fanno del pianista cubano un sicuro protagonista. In questo nuovo album, che è in qualche modo un triplo debutto (primo disco in trio, con una formazione nuova di zecca e per una diversa etichetta) tutti gli aspetti sopra citati vengono mantenuti e rafforzati, garantendo la perfetta riuscita di un’opera davvero maiuscola. Il formato e due partner di asso[1]luto livello danno modo a Virelles di mettere in piena evidenza le proprie qualità compositive (otto dei nove brani sono da lui scritti) e pianistiche (davvero enormi, in pieno accordo al milieu da cui proviene), sfruttando una specie di effetto-leva nella valorizzazione degli aspetti ritmico-melodici. La forza comunicativa della musica è spiccata e diretta, a tratti spettacolare, ma sempre caratterizzata dal grande equilibrio che la felicissima integrazione dei tre sa garantire. Questa brillantezza e le matrici più «popolari» (africane e caraibiche) non deprivano minimamente la complessa stratificazione della musica, che rimane sofisticata e raffinata. Ogni difficoltà viene affrontata e risolta con irrisoria facilità da tre musicisti di levatura altissima. Tra i brani spiccano, in particolare, per opinabile scelta personale, NYChepinsón, Tiempos, Confidencial (unico non originale, composto da Enrique Bonne), mentre quello che intitola il disco riporta verso atmosfere di oscura astrazione che fanno parte della cifra di Virelles, ma che in questo disco non prendono mai il sopravvento. Completa un quadro così splendente l’eccellente qualità della registrazione, operata nel leggendario studio di Rudy Van Gelder a Englewood Cliffs. Assolutamente da ascoltare.

Jazz Recordings of the Year - Finalists 2023

What a terrific year it's been for new music from the jazzosphere! We've had the privilege of listening to and reviewing a whole heap incredible recordings to have been released by the most wickedly talented contemporary artists around. Over the course of the past 12 months, the team here have been whittling down our favourite new albums from across the globe, each of which has made its way to our Leamington Spa office for us to sink our teeth into and wrap our ears around.

With a wide variety to choose from, the task was never going to be easy... but, with the help of our trusty reviews and weekly new release round-ups, we've revisited some of the most impressionable records from this year — ones we think deserve to take their newly-minted place in the jazz canon.

The shortlist for this year's Presto Awards celebrates the veritable breadth of the current jazz scene both at home and abroad, which we hope you will see reflected in our choice of nominees. Da un po’ di tempo il nome del pianista cubano David Virelles compare sempre più spesso tra le pagine di Off Topic. Lo abbiamo incrociato, ad esempio, tra i membri dell’organico del batterista Jonathan Blake nei suoi ultimi due album, Passage (2023) e Homeward Bound (2021) – vedi rispettivamente qui e qui – e inoltre ha fatto parte anche della band di Andrew Cyrille in The News (2021) – vedi qui. Nonostante Virelles sia arrivato con il nuovo Carta al settimo album da titolare – escludendo l’e.p. Antenna del 2016 – credo che questa sia effettivamente la prima volta in cui Off Topic si occupi direttamente di questo musicista. Il quarantenne Virelles appartiene a quella ben lunga tradizione di pianisti cubani che hanno contribuito alla storia del jazz moderno tra cui ritroviamo Bebo e Chucho Valdes, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Ramon Valle, Omar Sosa, Aruan Ortiz, Roberto Fonseca, Marialy Pacheco ecc. In cosa si differenziano i pianisti cubani da tutti gli altri? Non è certo una considerazione banale far riferimento alla padronanza delle eclettiche e variopinte componenti ritmiche, molto legate alle danze tradizionali, di cui Cuba è storicamente portatrice. Oltre al fatto che il pianoforte è considerato in primis uno strumento percussivo, i cubani sembrano possedere una fluida naturalezza nel creare armonie idonee al jazz e un’abilità tecnica e improvvisativa di prim’ordine, quasi fossero tutte queste caratteristiche derivative dal variegato e abitudinario rapporto con i ritmi frammentati delle loro danze. Forse è proprio per quest’ultima caratteristica che la loro musica possiede anche una venatura d’immediata sensualità, al netto di ogni semplice esotismo. Sfumatura peraltro presente anche in questo Carta – in spagnolo sta per “lettera” – che, almeno all’ascolto di gran parte dell’album, sembra quasi una rilettura in chiave contemporanea di tutta una specifica tradizione musicale centro-americana, rivisitata alla luce di componenti più moderne e piuttosto dissonanti legate al jazz ma anche influenzate, pur in misura minore, da un certo repertorio classico con cui Virelles ha avuto confidenza fin dall’età di sette anni.

La sua preparazione musicale, dopo una prima esperienza familiare – essendo figlio di musicisti – e una successiva fase di maturazione avvenuta a Toronto, si è affinata a New York con Henry Threadgill come maestro di composizione. In questa stessa città Virelles si è ritrovato a incidere dischi come sideman con artisti come Chris Potter, Tomasz Stanko e i già citati Jonathan Blake e Andrew Cyrille, oltre ad aver suonato anche con Mark Turner, Steve Coleman, Wadada Leo Smith, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian, Tom Harrell, Ravi Coltrane ed altri ancora. Virelles, in questo Carta, utilizza abbondantemente le percussioni che sono in qualche modo la vera ossatura dorsale delle sue composizioni. Non dobbiamo però immaginarci una musica latina aderente a dei modelli noti, tutta esuberanza ed atteggiamenti estrovertiti. Virelles non è certo un pianista convenzionale di musica latino-americana. Si rimane quindi lontani dai cliché più comuni e si prende nota dell’aspetto profondo di queste composizioni, con momenti spesso più oscuri e meditabondi, in aggiunta alla tecnica eccellente di Virelles che emerge in primo piano tra improvvise mareggiate ritmiche e solitari ripiegamenti sonori. Il pianismo dell’artista cubano risente anche di passaggi più contemporanei e di immersioni in momentanee correnti atonali ma il tutto si svolge sotto un vigile senso autocritico che non permette lo sconfinamento verso territori troppo verbosi. La formazione triadica di questo album, oltre al piano di Virelles, prevede Ben Street al contrabbasso ed Eric McPherson alla batteria e alle percussioni. Ciliegina sulla torta, la presenza di Maureen Sickler, l’ingegnere del suono ex assistente di Rudy Van Gelder all’interno dello storico studio del New Jersey, dove l’album in questione è stato realizzato.

Primo brano in esame è Uncommon Sense, magnifico esempio di quel pianismo jazz contemporaneo in perenne stato pencolante tra il dentro ed il fuori rispetto all’armonia tradizionale. Virelles non fa sconti all’ascoltatore, gli fa dono di una componente ritmica impeccabile e di facile presa condotta dai suoi partner, mentre al piano osa senza ritegno, dopo una brevissima e pensosa introduzione solitaria con una traccia di bassi che fa da guida alla futura sequenza del contrabbassista. Atmosfera tutt’altro che apertamente latina, come avevo accennato poco sopra. Improvvisazione e accenni tematici si sovrappongono con scale che s’inflazionano di note armonicamente estranee. Il ventaglio timbrico si apre e si chiude, spesso si ancora a una coppia di accordi reiterati, una momentanea boa di sostegno in un fluire di note che tuttavia non cancella la frontiera del silenzio, quella linea strategica segnata a dare il giusto respiro senza creare una sovrabbondanza soffocante di suono. L’essenziale line-up autorizzerebbe l’inclusione del presente lavoro nel sottofilone jazz dei duo pianoforte-ancia, ma vi è il sospetto che le naturali propensioni del contitolare Tim Berne possano condurre a sparigliare le carte delle attese e lanciare “oltre” i termini del dialogo abitualmente inteso.
Eppure è eterogenea e polimorfa la suddetta tradizione, che ha già associato nel tempo personalità assai diverse, dall’iconico e storico duo Steve Lacy – Mal Waldron all’eponimo e classico album Duke Ellington & John Coltrane, dall’importante ma forse non memorabile coppia Braxton & Abrahams alle rare ma suggestive esternazioni tra Zawinul e Shorter, e già soltanto in casa Intakt ha collezionato dualità comprendenti Aki Takase-Louis Sclavis, Alexander Hawkins-Angelika Niescier, Kris Davis–Ingrid Laubrock, Aruán Ortiz-Don Byron e via appaiando.

È dunque la volta del sassofonista ed animatore Tim Berne, eminente non solo presso la scena ‘newyorker’ e di turbolenta nomea, passato dopo una fluviale discografia, tra cui alcune produzioni in CleanFeed ed ECM a regolari apparizioni presso la label elvetica, da cui sembra aver ottenuto mano abbastanza libera nell’esternarsi con formazioni differenziate, giungendo ad una formazione sulla carta assai essenziale insieme al pianista e compositore Matt Mitchell, prolifico sideman più volte apprezzato in esperienze discografiche, segnatamente presso Scramble e PiRecordings, e la cui frequentazione s’articola almeno nell’ultimo decennio anche nelle fila nel collettivo Snakeoil.

L’atteso tour de force s’avvia nell’intensa Purdy, a firma di Berne come quasi tutta la sequenza, aperta di fatto con espressioni sensibili e solidamente manierate, per poi innervarsi con vivide energie nel sancire i primi tratti idiomatici del dialogo. Un dominante spirito contemplativo sembra tratteggiare la successiva Number 2, a firma dell’ispirativo mentore Julius Hemphill, transitando con Rose-colored Missive verso la declamazione dai toni bruniti dell’ancia, d’allure avventurosa quanto riflessiva, cedendo inflessioni di ben maggiore dinamismo e grinta esplorativa.

Frizzante verve e brunito metallo nella serrata apertura di Oddly Enough/Squidz, conducente ad intricate quanto distinte linee solistiche, incarnate dalla grandine pianistica e dalle saette del sax, esposte verso l’astrattezza figurativa; non priva di calligrafismo la tastiera in Middle Seat Blues/Chicken Salad Blues, che del grande filone stilistico importa anche pathos e concitazione, segnatamente grazie alla lacerata voce dell’ancia. Ci s’interroga su dove voglia andare a parare un titolo come Motian Sickness, che dello scomparso, sommo batterista armeno-americano non reca il senso dell’orchestrazione quanto i tratti più idiosincratici e spigolosi, entro un brano dalle geometrie sfuggenti ed aguzze; spicca per estensione la conclusiva Rolled Oats/Curls, la cui ampiezza autorizza una scansione in stanze immaginative, di palese senso d’invettiva nella parte centrale e nella conclusiva, ad intervallare passaggi di calda e scultorea discorsività.

La vivace sequenza di “One more, please” è anche gratificata dalle note di copertina del confratello ed illustre garante Django Bates, che sancisce tra l’altro la considerazione, non sorprendente, secondo cui “Con questo duo c’è sempre una possibilità ulteriore, e sempre il coraggio di affrontarla e condurla a termine” anche se forse porremmo un po’ di cautela circa gli “infiniti sviluppi ed interpretazioni cui aprono le porte” le tracce dell’album. Certo, s’impone alla fruizione l’alienità discorsiva e strutturale di Berne, in varie guise assortita o sinergica con la fluente inventiva di Mitchell, che acutamente investe sulle poliedriche incombenza del pianismo contemporaneo, laddove il primo dinamicamente capitalizza quanto dovuto al riconosciuto mentore Julius Hemphill (oltre alla non poche ascendenze dal milieu chicagoano), ma il tandem ulteriormente espande il potenziale in sette passaggi di sviluppo consistente, a più tratti spregiudicato, di spirito e lunare e obliquo tratto (de)costruttivo.
